A day in the Life

Dairy Crest Field Sales gives you real variety and challenge. On any one day, you could be visiting your customers, working with colleagues to plan new product launches or liaising with other internal departments regarding promotional compliance. One thing’s for sure – every day is different!

FRIDAY

8.00am.
Busy day today. Yesterday was the monthly team meeting at Esher, so lots to think about. Just checked my journey plan for today and now on my way to the first call of the day. Still smiling about us winning the team incentive for the biggest uplift in sales at the meeting yesterday for our work with Cathedral City Lighter during the Jan/Feb dieting campaign.

10.00am.
OK. Great meeting with ASDA. Managed to get a gondola end for Cathedral City at full price – Store manager understood my argument that this would be a win:win for both of us. Have agreed to do sampling in store and track sales over the next two weeks so they can see what a difference it makes. Picking up a coffee now and then onwards!

10.20am.
Musing over the Cathedral City brand team’s presentation yesterday and all the exciting NPD in the pipeline. Must remember to get back with some ideas on how we can support the launch in-store.

10.30 am.
The best made plans! Just had a call from Jo and have to make a detour to a big Tesco – apparently some stock has got damaged and I need to investigate and work with them to prevent this effecting them again. No two days are ever the same with this job!

12.00pm.
Hmm tricky meeting – I didn't feel I achieved too much here. I checked all the forecasts to make sure they would have enough stock going forward and it’s all OK now. I am going to talk to David, my area manager, he’s a bit of a specialist in these issues and I know he’ll be able to give me some pointers for the future. But thinking about it now, I did manage to get some missing shelf edge labels put up and get a new promotion in place as well, so on reflection, not too bad. Must grab a sandwich to eat on route

1.00pm.
That’s better. Next call is to discuss setting up some in-store sampling for a customer. They are underperforming their company average sales and we’re going to work with them to improve this. I’ll be back over here next Friday to get it going.

2.00pm.
Just spoke to Vicky – she’s had a great meeting at Sainsbury’s today. We talked about the planned promotions for this next month which we discussed with the various national account managers at yesterday’s team meeting. There’s a ‘Value Bay’, a couple of ‘Two-for's’ and there’s some seasonal promotions now coming up. It’s our job to make sure these happen in the various stores as planned.

2.30pm.
Back to my journey planner. That stock issue has caused a bit of a problem today so I’m not going to make the 7 calls I had planned. Still time for a couple this afternoon though – that new Morrisons store for one and then Somerfield.

4.30pm.
Last one and then the weekend begins! Must get my application in for the Dairy Crest NAM position that Jo has suggested would be a good move for me. I love the variety and responsibility of Field Sales, but the NAM would be a great role too and give me so much more experience.

5.30pm.
That’s me, another 120 miles clocked up, I don't know where the time goes! Just complete my weekly report and change my presenter to include the new visual aids for Marketing. I’ve got an exciting weekend planned and a really challenging few days coming up next week. Over and out.
